Office for Catechesis (Archdiocese of Singapore)

The Office for Catechesis

... brethen, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may speed on, and triumph as it did among you

2 Thess 3:1

The Office for Catechesis supports and develops the catechetical ministries in 28 parishes of the Singapore Archdiocese. Since 2010, the Office has embarked on a process of renewal of formal catechesis in the diocese, developing a new curriculum for catechetical sessions in the parishes and providing training and faith formation for those involved in catechesis for children, youth and adults. The Office advocates a Revelation-based approach and Liturgical Catechesis to invite the catechumen to an ever deepening encounter with Jesus Christ and His Church. Knowledge of the faith and personal conversion are both essential in leading people to discipleship and bringing Christ's Light to the world.

Catechesis is...

..PUTTING PEOPLE IN COMMUNION WITH CHRIST:
"The definitive aim of catechesis is to put people not only in touch, but also in communion and intimacy with Jesus Christ." (General Directory for Catechesis #80)

...ALWAYS MAKING THE LOVE OF OUR LORD ACCESSIBLE:
"The whole concern of doctrine and its teaching must be directed to the love that never ends. Whether something is proposed for belief, for hope or for action, the love of our Lord must always be made accessible, so that anyone can see that all the works of perfect Christian virtue spring from love and have no other objective than to arrive at love.." (Catechism of the Catholic Church #25)

...COMMUNICATING GOD'S REVELATION:
"Pedagogy of faith is not a question of transmitting human knowledge, even of the highest kind; it is a question of communicating God's revelation in its entirety. Throughout sacred history, especially in the Gospel, God Himself used a pedagogy that must continue to be a model for the pedagogy of faith. A technique is of value in catechesis only to the extent that it serves the faith that is to be transmitted and learned; otherwise it is of no value." (Catechesi Tradendae #58)

...WHERE THE CHILD WILL BE OUR TEACHER:
"If we want to help the child draw nearer to God, we should, with patience and courage, seek to go always closer to the vital nucleus of things. This requires study and prayer. The child will be our teacher if we know how to observe children." (Dr. Sofia Cavalletti, Biblical Scholar, Co-founder, Catechesis of the Good Shepherd)
