Bridging Programme
What is the Bridging Programme?
Managed by the Office for Catechesis (OFC), the Bridging Programme is a catechetical programme for children and youth. The aim of the programme is to help the candidates build up a relationship with the Holy Trinity, and to enable them to live the Christian life in a state of conversion. It uses the baptismal catechumenate as the inspiration for catechesis which ensures that catechesis encompasses elements of Paschal, initiatory, liturgical, community, kerygmatic and progressive characters (as directed by the General Directory for Catechesis #90-91 and new Directory for Catechesis #61-65).
This programme includes preparation for the reception of the sacraments, namely Baptism, Penance & Reconciliation and the Eucharist.
Who Should Attend?
Children/youth (aged 9 to 13) who fall into one of the following categories:
1. Baptised children/youth who have never had formal catechesis and wish to start.
2. Baptised children/youth who have ‘dropped out’ of formal catechesis and wish to rejoin.
3. Baptised children/youth from overseas with no or little formal catechesis.
4. Unbaptised children/youth who wish to be baptised and will join parish catechesis thereafter.
HOW LONG IS BRIDGING PROGRAMME?
The programme is modular and runs for 4 terms (corresponding to the same schedule of local school terms).
Children/youth enrolled are expected to complete 4 terms before they can return to their own parishes to join the relevant level the following year.
OFC will liaise with respective parish coordinators to ensure a smooth transition of the candidates back into existing parish catechesis for ongoing formation.
hOW ARE PARENTS INVOLVED?
Parents are expected to meet with their child's catechists at the end of every term to review their child's faith journey. In addition, there will be parent formation sessions conducted every term, to allow parents to come together as a community to pray for their children, as well as to experience for themselves, some aspects of the programme that the child would experience. This would enable parents to further dialogue with their child about their own faith experience.
