Basic Course in Catechesis: Scripture
“There is no doctrine which could be better, more precious and more splendid than the text of the Gospel. Behold and retain what our Lord and Master, Christ, has taught by his words and accomplished by his deeds.”
– The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC), 127
This follow up course will expand on the background, main themes and characteristics of the Synoptic Gospels: Matthew, Mark, and Luke; previously touched on in the Basic Course in Catechesis: Scripture.
"Therefore, the study of the sacred page should be the very soul of sacred theology.
The ministry of the Word, too - pastoral preaching, catechetics and all forms of Christian instruction (…)
is healthily nourished and thrives in holiness through the Word of Scripture."
– CCC 132, quoting Dei Verbum 24
The objectives of this course are for catechists to:
Deepen their appreciation of Sacred Scriptures and Tradition as important sources for catechesis (cf. The General Directory for Catechesis, 127)
Foster a deeper relationship with God through Sacred Scriptures so that they truly bear witness to the new life that stems from their encounters with the Living Word (cf. Directory for Catechesis, 113a)
Grow in their appreciation and knowledge of the Synoptic Gospels in order to be able to transmit the Good News in relation to the cultural, ecclesial and existential context of the hearer (Directory for Catechesis, 143)
