COURSE DESCRIPTION &  PURPOSE

The questions of bioethics pose a challenge to catechesis and its formative function. Catechesis educates one in the formation of conscience relative to questions of life, recalling the need to pay attention to the challenges posed by developments of science and technology as well as bringing out the elements fundamental for the proclamation of the faith. This is so that issues such as human life as a gift from God, respect for the person and his integral development, science and technology ordered for the good of humanity may find adequate room in the light of the Church's Magisterium expressed also in the Catechism of the Catholic Church (cf. Directory for Catechesis, #378).

Over the 3 weeks, topics covered include:

Session 1

The beginning of life (i.e. status of the human embryo, medically assisted procreation, abortion, etc.)

Session 2

Stewards of the human body (i.e. health and human experimentation, genetic engineering, biotechnology, difference between therapeutic intervention vs. manipulation, etc.)

Session 3

The end of life (e.g. definition of death, euthanasia, palliative care, etc.)
